UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller That Blends Survival Horror and Social Deduction Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive experience where a young woman harboring several personalities inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Inside her exist four separate personas, all possessing their own fears and drives. These entities can take over spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Based on showcased gameplay, much of the action takes place within a creepy medical facility, though additional clips depict the protagonist navigating a desolate church.
A World of Personal Dread
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Things that appear minor to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that idea — fears that are specific to each person."
The core mechanic revolves around controlling the persona that surfaces at any given time. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the protagonist in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with nurses all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous blooms where their necks are. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the souls claims that the body is rightfully them," explains a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, since each soul can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The last one standing could be a fake. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
