The Reason Los Blancos Possess 'Utter Faith' in Youngster Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for Real Madrid, including five starts.

Whenever a teenage creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a crucial European tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.

In only his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil last-16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side overcome the English champions in Tuesday's return to secure a last eight place.

At 18 years old, Pitarch was the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise From The Academy

This talent is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a positive impact.

He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and drive he added to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'

In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the first team and gave him playing time during the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I began playing the game, every day you go to train and each day you have a game," stated the player after his first appearance.

"I've just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Given a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.

The teenager has seized it with displays that have belied his youth and inexperience.

"He is a extremely fast player, and you can observe what he's capable of," said the coach. "He is incredibly energetic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.

"His greatest quality is his character," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I realize fans might be astonished to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to do what he usually does.

"He will keep receiving chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the option to play for both nations at senior international level.

According to international regulations, footballers may represent different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they play in a competitive senior international match.

He has played for the Spanish national team at youth level, turning out for both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with interest.

Speaking recently, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my final decision so far. My situation is positive with Spain, but I'll make a decision in the near future."

This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While teenage Yamal chose Spain, Diaz opted to play for the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.

He played over an hour in the two-one win at City, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the club pursue future success.

After his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the same. We deal with it very normally. I try not to think about it excessively - I must deserve my minutes on the pitch," he said following the win at Manchester.
