The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Selected the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at several agonizing personal histories for characters including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.
All in all, the intro appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the song choice.
This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the official score of that title, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
Personally, The series' opening fails to capture the excitement and excitement that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.
Of course, the creators has already said that the series will have a few changes and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
