Russell Wilson Responds at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Quarterback Comments

New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this week, responding to latest criticism from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated on X. "Didn't realize you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media."

Wilson's remarks directly referenced the notorious bounty scandal controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton was coaching the Saints.

During that period, the NFL determined that the Saints had incentivized team members for delivering hard hits on opponents. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for one season.

What Sparked the Recent Dispute

The quarterback's reaction came after Payton delivered comments following Denver's remarkable comeback win over the New York. Payton remarked that the team had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Additionally, Payton hinted that he had told team owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson instead of Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" Payton commented.

Background of the Wilson-Payton Partnership

  • Wilson was traded to the Denver from Seattle in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245M extension.
  • The Broncos finished 4-11 in his first season prior to the team brought in Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a period in TV commentary.
  • The coach replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a move that prevented the quarterback from suffering an injury.

Had Wilson remained on the roster by March 2024, his $37 million salary for the following year would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was released, marking the ugly breakup between the player and his mentor.
