Miami Heat & Trail Blazers Claim First Victories After Recent Detentions

NBA game action

Miami put up eighty-six opening half points against the Memphis Grizzlies

The Heat earned a overwhelming 146 to 114 victory over the Grizzlies in their first basketball match after guard Rozier was arrested over alleged illegal gambling.

Trail Blazers coach Billups was also arrested as part of a sweeping federal investigation into illegal gambling. Both men deny the claims.

However, the Miami team were not distracted as they scored eighty-six opening half points to lead Memphis by thirty-nine at halftime, the largest halftime lead in the team's 37 year existence.

Bam Adebayo top-scored with 24 scores and afterwards stated Terry had the team's full backing.

"We support him. Complete backing," Adebayo stated. "You support him through and through. That's our brother at the end of the day."

Heat coach Spoelstra commented: "Terry is somebody who is very dear to all of us. He's had a real positive impact on our team.

"We send our thoughts and support for him as he goes through the situation."

Portland also won their first game since the arrests, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and guiding the team to a convincing 139-119 win against the Golden State Warriors.

"Everyone experienced positive times with Billups and his coaching style," Tiago remarked. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but we have a job to do."

NBA Commissioner Silver 'Upset' over Arrests

Addressing the detentions for the initial occasion, NBA commissioner Silver stated he was "very upset" by the incidents of the past few days.

"There's nothing more important to the league and its fans than the integrity of the competition," he informed a broadcaster. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."

Silver further mentioned an league probe into Rozier's actions in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he participated for the Charlotte Hornets against the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.

"We were informed by the regulators and the betting companies," he continued.

"We investigated the matter and were very transparent regarding it. And while there was the unusual wagering, we, honestly, couldn't find anything.

"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the NBA is unable to.

"So, we've been cooperating since then. And, of course, what they revealed recently was an charge.

"And 30 months after, he has not been found guilty of anything, in fairness to Terry.

"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise here between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
