One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is departing from the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a batch of emails between him and notorious criminal the accused trafficker became publicly available.

Summers commented in a statement that he was "thankful for the privilege to have participated, enthusiastic about the potential of the organization, and eagerly await following their advancement".

The former Harvard president, who once headed the Ivy League institution, declared on recently that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.

The newly public emails revealed that Summers exchanged messages with Epstein until the eve of his 2019 detention for suspected trafficking of underage individuals.

In another announcement, the technology organization stated it respected his choice to resign.

"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the insight he provided to the Board," OpenAI commented.

Political Context

This announcement comes after the two houses of the US legislature voted on recently to pass a bill that would compel the federal prosecutors to disclose its documents on the case.

The legislation will afterward proceed to the desk of President Trump for signature. Trump has said he expects to sign the bill, after changing his stance on the subject following pressure from his followers.

A batch of Epstein-related messages disclosed by the House Oversight Committee last week included numerous high-profile figures in the Epstein's past associates, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those figures.

After the messages were made available with the wider community, he said he accepted "total ownership for my poor choice to maintain corresponding with the financier".

Summers held high-level positions under Democratic administrations; acting as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as director of the White House economic team under Barack Obama.

He led Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and is still a academic there. When announcing his departure from public roles recently on Monday, he indicated he would persist with his academic responsibilities.

Further Repercussions

Following the economist's statement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a progressive research organization in DC where the professor was a researcher, announced that he was not affiliated with the institution.

He joined the leadership of OpenAI, which makes the AI chatbot, in last year - following a defeated move to oust its top executive Sam Altman.
