Afghan Rulers Employed Abandoned UK Equipment to Locate Afghans That Served With Allied Troops, Inquiry Is Told
An informant has told an official investigation that British authorities abandoned sensitive equipment allowing Afghanistan's rulers to locate local individuals who collaborated with allied troops.
Information Leak Endangers Numerous in Danger
The whistleblower, identified as Person A, stated that Afghans affected by the information breach were instructed to relocate and switch their contact details to avoid detection from the ruling authorities.
Lawmakers are investigating the UK government's management of a catastrophic breach of confidential data concerning nearly 19,000 individuals who had asked to relocate to Britain to flee the regime.
The Information Breach Occurred
A data file including private information, such as names, addresses and sometimes household data, was accidentally leaked by a staff member employed at British military command in early 2022.
The incident became known only in August 2023, when details of several individuals who had requested to settle in the UK appeared on online platforms.

Consequences of the Security Lapse
Early investigations provided to the committee estimated that at least 49 relatives and co-workers of Afghans affected by the incident had been executed.
A legal restriction regarding the leak was enacted in last year and prevented any information regarding the matter from public disclosure until mid-2025.
Security Recommendations
Due to legal constraints, the source and the volunteer organization associated with told affected households they were assisting that they had “suspicions that mobile communications had been intercepted”.
“We advised that they moved where feasible and switched their mobile numbers. Those were the two main details that, should militant forces had access to these details, would result in them being traced,” the source testified.
Contested Findings
The whistleblower argued that government assessment conducted by a former official had been mistaken to conclude that the possession of the dataset by the Taliban was “not significantly alter present danger”.
“The thing to remember is that these individuals are in hiding from the authorities; they are in hiding. The primary issue involves past work history.”
The source explained horrific abuse endured by concerned people, including electric shock torture, waterboarding, and violent assaults.
“There are cases of young kids who have had their arms broken to pressure relatives to disclose hiding places,” she testified.
