Aaron Rai Clinches Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Playoff Showdown Versus Tommy Fleetwood

Aaron Rai demonstrated remarkable nerve to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a dramatic play-off after a rollercoaster last day of play.

Rai sank a crucial birdie putt from just over eight foot to seal the win, echoing his sole prior Rolex Series triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a playoff victory over Fleetwood.

Final Round Excitement

Rai started the final round with a single stroke advantage over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that featured seven birdie putts and two bogeys.

Fleetwood moved one shot clear with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the final green.

Playoff Decider

That set up a playoff at Yas Links where Rai triumphed to claim the title and $1.5 million (ÂŁ1.13m) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even better individual. To play with him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” stated Rai, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on your game and staying in the zone, it’s hard to put into words at the present how it is. It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”

Notable Performances

The Northern Irish star found himself a bit too far to do, coming up a stroke behind in a tie for third with the Dane, after a stunning 62 closing round of 62. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever score on the DP World Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and one eagle.

The Danish golfer fired six birdie putts of his own, but his chances of topping the standings were dented by a dropped shot on the twelfth. England’s Richard Mansell produced an excellent last round seven-under to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australian Hillier.
